What is a routing number?
A routing number (ABA number) is a 9-digit code that identifies a US financial institution. It is used for ACH transfers, wire transfers, direct deposits, and check processing.
How do I find a routing number?
Routing numbers appear on the bottom left of checks, in online banking portals, or can be looked up using our API with the bank name. The first 4 digits indicate the Federal Reserve routing symbol.
Are all 9-digit numbers valid routing numbers?
No, valid routing numbers must pass a checksum validation. Our API validates the format and checksum, returning an error for invalid routing numbers.
Can a bank have multiple routing numbers?
Yes, large banks often have different routing numbers for different regions or services (paper vs. electronic transfers). Our API returns the specific bank branch associated with each routing number.
